Berks County Patriots Meeting Reflections

On Thursday, June 18th, I visited my friends at the Berks County Patriots, where there were very riveting speakers all relating to something that should be at the forefront of our minds every day—our children and our freedom.
The conversations throughout the evening centered on civic understanding, constitutional awareness, and the role of faith and character in shaping the next generation.

Faith Civics and Our Childrens Future 1

Constitutional Rights, Civic Duty, and Our Founding Principles

The first speaker was Pastor David Whitney of the Institute on the Constitution. He spoke about the importance of knowing our constitutional rights, the revival of our Republic, and the foundational principles of the Constitution rooted in our nation’s moral and spiritual heritage.

He emphasized preserving our cash system, protecting privacy, and safeguarding what he described as our God-given rights. He also stressed the importance of teaching civics to our children so they understand not only their rights but the responsibilities that come with citizenship.

Pastor Whitney presented what he called three “self-evident truths”:

  1. There is a Creator God.
  2. Our rights come from Him and Him alone.
  3. The sole purpose of human civil government is to protect and secure those God-given rights.

According to the MTC Speakers pamphlet provided at the event, Pastor Whitney’s background includes being a Henry Rutgers Honors Scholar (B.A. History, Rutgers University) and receiving his master’s degree from Denver Seminary. He has been a guest speaker for Turning Point USA Faith and has served as a Senior Instructor at the Institute on the Constitution for over 26 years, teaching America’s Christian heritage and constitutional principles. He is also the author of The Duty of the Jury, The Truth of America’s Founding, and Defend the Constitution and works as a radio and video teacher specializing in law and liberty.¹

Faith, Character, and Education for the Next Generation

Another major theme of the evening was the importance of education that builds not only academic knowledge, but also moral character and civic awareness.

While not a speaker, Keystone Freedom Academy was featured in the event pamphlet as one of the “Partners for Civic Renewal.” The school’s mission was described as filling an important gap in education through faith-based civics and character formation.

Keystone Freedom Academy is a private school that focuses on individualized education, including children with special needs, and presents itself as making a meaningful difference in students' lives by combining academic learning with civic knowledge, responsibility, and moral development. Their work emphasizes helping students of all backgrounds grow in character while receiving tailored educational support.

Personal Reflection

I feel that building strong faith-based character is crucial in helping children from all walks of life navigate our world and grow into adults of strong moral character.

Civic awareness is also something I believe many young people lack today. Understanding our Constitution, our rights, and the responsibilities of citizenship should not be optional—it should be foundational.

The only way to make meaningful change in our communities is to let faith, moral conviction, and a sense of responsibility guide how we raise and educate our children.

While different approaches to education exist, I believe there is real value in programs that emphasize civics, character formation, and individualized learning—especially for children who need additional support, including those with special needs.

I would personally love to see more programs like this made available, or even more broadly integrated into our education system.
